Hiking by Lake Geneva

Impressive gorges, flower-lined lake shores and unique panoramic views: if you love hiking, you are sure to have a wonderful time by Lake Geneva. We have selected a few exciting hikes in the Montreux region for you.

Gorges du Chauderon

Just a few steps away from the old town of Montreux, you will find a wild natural landscape with a wonderful gorge – Gorges du Chauderon. Here you can follow the rushing Baye de Montreux stream and marvel at the deep-sided gorge which becomes ever grander as you head up to Les Avants.

The signposted "Sentier des Narcisses" trail offers fabulous views of the Alps and Lake Geneva. In May, you can experience a special highlight when the path and meadows are carpeted with "May snow": narcissi in bloom, which fill the air with their captivating scent in a rare natural spectacle and transform the path into a sea of white flowers.

Rochers-de-Naye

Do you want to enjoy panoramic views of the Swiss and French Alps?

A ride on the cog railway up to Rochers-de-Naye takes you from the shores of Lake Geneva up into the mountains. There you will find an ideal starting point for a host of hiking trails at 2,000 metres' altitude from which you can marvel at the Eiger or Mont Blanc, for example. You can also enjoy other attractive leisure options, such as a visit to the La Rambertia Alpine garden with its collection of more than 1,000 Alpine plants.

Lavaux vineyards

If you have a little more time to spare and appreciate fabulous views of Lake Geneva, you are sure to love this hike from Lausanne to Vevey. Along the route you will pass picturesque winegrowing villages every so often and can marvel at the Lavaux vineyards. The rows of terraces are so unique that they were designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2007.

Would you like to discover the many fascinating facets of Lavaux wines, winemakers and touristic sites? Book online one of the many selected wine tourism activities offered by Swiss Wine Tours, the official Swiss wine tourism platform! To finish off your hike, Vevey is a real treat with its labyrinth of narrow streets and wonderful town promenade.

Montreux Riviera promenade

The varied flat hike from Montreux to Villeneuve offers breathtaking views and is also suitable for inexperienced hiking enthusiasts.

The route starts in Montreux on the famous lakeside promenade. Thanks to the mild climate, you will find exotic plants and palm trees there whatever the season, which look particularly beautiful backed by the Alps.

The path continues past the world-famous Chillon Castle: the waterside castle stands proudly on a rocky island just off the shore of Lake Geneva and is the most-visited historical building in Switzerland, not least due to its unique location. When you reach Villeneuve, you can watch the sun go down by Lake Geneva and sample one of the region's excellent wines.
